What crawl spaces look like in south Atlanta

Most homes built before the 1990s in the south Atlanta metro have vented crawl spaces: open foundation walls with vent openings around the perimeter, dirt floor, and joists exposed above. The vented design assumes outdoor air will dry out the crawl space and prevent moisture problems. In Georgia's humid climate, vented crawl spaces tend to do the opposite: outdoor air carries moisture in, and the moisture stays trapped. The result, over years, is moldy insulation, deteriorated vapor barriers, pest activity, and sometimes structural damage to the wood framing above.

The three things in most crawl spaces

Old fiberglass insulation, hanging from the joists, often damp and sometimes moldy. Old polyethylene vapor barrier across the dirt floor, torn and folded. Pest evidence: droppings, nesting material, sometimes dead animals or rodent carcasses. About 60% of the crawl spaces we clear in south Atlanta also have abandoned building materials from previous remodels: old pipe, scrap wood, leftover insulation rolls, sometimes plumbing fixtures.

Before encapsulation: the cleanout

Most crawl space encapsulation projects need a cleanout first. The encapsulation company will not install a new vapor barrier and seal vents on top of old debris. Our crawl space cleanout typically involves removing all old fiberglass insulation from the joists (bagged and hauled), removing the old vapor barrier from the floor (typically in pieces), removing any debris and abandoned materials, and bagging any pest contamination for proper disposal.

PPE and safety in crawl spaces

Crawl spaces are confined spaces. Our crew works in respirator masks (mold concerns), Tyvek suits (insulation fibers, pest contamination), gloves, and headlamps. Most south Atlanta crawl spaces have 24–36 inches of clearance: comfortable for one person at a time, and slow work. The job timeline depends on access more than on volume.

Pricing crawl space jobs

Crawl space cleanouts typically run a half load to a full truck ($520–$725) for a standard residential crawl space. Larger or more contaminated jobs can run over. The slow part is the access, so we usually quote crawl space jobs after an in-person walkthrough or detailed photos. See our crawl space cleanout service for the service overview.

Coordination with encapsulation

Most of our crawl space cleanout work is a referral from encapsulation companies in the Atlanta market. We schedule the cleanout to finish 24–48 hours before the encapsulation crew arrives. The handoff is straightforward: dirt floor, no debris, joists exposed, ready for vapor barrier and dehumidifier install.

FAQ

Quick answers

Do you offer same-day junk removal?

Yes. We keep a same-day or next-day guarantee on both junk removal and dumpster drop-offs, based on availability, and we have held that standard for years. We are closed on Sundays, so a Saturday call means a same-day or Monday appointment.

How long does junk removal take?

Most pickups take about 30 to 45 minutes on site, and many are faster. Larger jobs such as a full home or storage unit cleanout take longer, but the majority of jobs are smaller than people expect.

How much does junk removal cost?

There is no flat rate, because jobs range from a single box to a full house or storage unit cleanout. Pricing is custom and based on how much space your items take up on the truck and how long the removal takes our crew. Jobs start at a $175 minimum, and you always get a firm price before any work begins.

What do you do with the junk you haul?

We run a landfill diversion program and do not use landfills. Loads go to transfer stations, recycling centers, and scrap yards, where salvageable items are pulled out, metal is recovered and recycled, construction debris is often milled into mulch or building material, tires become rubber playground mulch, and yard waste is turned into wood chips. We donate usable items to local charities when a load allows it. Because most jobs are mixed loads, individual pieces are not always in donatable condition by the time they reach the truck, but keeping material out of the landfill is central to how we work.

Will I get a price before you start?

Yes. Every job starts with a free, no-obligation quote. We assess the volume and the access when we arrive, give you a firm upfront price, and only begin once you approve it. No hidden fees and no surprises.
