What Size Dumpster Do I Need? A Plain-English Guide

Dumpster sizes confuse almost everyone, and the reason is simple: nobody thinks in cubic yards. You know what a garage full of boxes looks like. You know what a torn-out kitchen looks like. Nobody stands in their driveway picturing 15 cubic yards.

So here is the trick we give every caller. One cubic yard holds about one washing machine. A 10 yard dumpster swallows roughly 10 washing machines' worth of stuff. A 20 yard, about 20. Once you picture your pile as a stack of washing machines, the size question mostly answers itself.

The four sizes, side by side

Two things worth noticing. First, the 15, 20, and 25 all share the same 16 by 7.5 foot footprint. They grow up, not out, so a bigger dumpster does not eat more driveway. Second, the price gaps are small. The jump from a 15 to a 20 costs $15 and buys you an extra foot of wall. A second haul because the first dumpster filled up costs a lot more than $15.

Match the size to the project

Pick a 10 yard for one-room jobs. A bathroom demo, a small deck tear-out, a closet-and-attic purge. If your pile would fit in the bed of two pickup trucks stacked generously, a 10 is enough.

Pick a 15 yard for the classic garage cleanout. This is our most common residential size. It also fits flooring tear-outs and medium yard projects. If you are searching for a "small dumpster," this or the 10 is what you mean, and either one sits fine on a residential driveway.

Pick a 20 yard when you are clearing most of a house or reroofing. Furniture is bulky and awkward, and it eats space faster than people expect. Three bedrooms of furniture plus boxes is a 20 yard job.

Pick a 25 yard for construction debris, full estate cleanouts, and hoarding-scale volume. Contractors default here for a reason: drywall, lumber, and cabinetry stack badly and fill space fast. It also carries the biggest weight allowance, two full tons.

When you are stuck between two sizes

Size up. We say this to every caller and it is almost never the wrong answer. People underestimate their pile because half of it is hidden in closets, attics, and behind the water heater. Extra room costs a few dollars, and an overfilled container becomes your problem on pickup day: the load has to sit level with the top rail or below, and a driver who finds a couch riding above the rim has to refuse the lift until the load is cleared to a safe level. You get 15 minutes to fix it after the driver flags it, which is a stressful quarter hour that a size-up avoids entirely.

The materials that change the answer

Weight matters as much as space. Every size includes its own disposal allowance (one ton on the 10, a ton and a half on the 15 and 20, two tons on the 25), and overage runs 5 cents per pound after weigh-in. A typical household cleanout stays inside the allowance. Roofing shingles are the common exception: dense, flat, and deceptively heavy, which is one reason reroofing jobs go straight to the 20.

And some materials cannot go in a roll-off at all. Concrete, brick, stone, dirt, sand, gravel, and asphalt are prohibited in every size, along with liquids, paint, oils, chemicals, batteries, and propane tanks.
