By Southside Junk Removal

"Eco-friendly junk removal" gets used a lot in marketing. It's worth being specific about what it actually means, because the answer varies more than most companies admit. Some companies haul everything to the landfill and call themselves green. Others have real processes for sorting, donating, and recycling.

Here's exactly what happens to different types of items when Southside Junk Removal picks them up, and where we're honest about our limitations.

Furniture: what gets donated vs. what doesn't

Furniture in good condition gets offered to local donation partners before anything else. In metro Atlanta, working relationships with organizations like Goodwill of North Georgia and Habitat for Humanity ReStores allow furniture to stay in circulation and out of the landfill.

The honest part: not all furniture is donatable. Sofas with stains, broken frames, pet damage, or age-related deterioration typically get rejected by donation centers. Donation organizations have limited space and they maintain quality standards. If a piece doesn't meet those standards, it goes to the landfill. We don't donate items that will just get thrown away by the receiving organization, because that's not actually better for the environment.

What this means for you: if you have furniture in solid condition, let us know. We'll flag it for donation consideration. If it's worn out, expect it to go to disposal.

Electronics: certified e-waste recycling

Electronics are handled separately from general waste, full stop. Televisions, computers, monitors, printers, phones, and other electronics contain materials, including lead, mercury, cadmium, and lithium, that cannot safely go into a standard landfill.

We route all electronics to certified e-waste recyclers who break down the materials properly. Circuit boards get processed for rare materials. Screens are handled to prevent mercury leaching. Batteries are separated and processed through appropriate channels.

Georgia does not have a mandatory e-waste recycling law for consumers as of 2024, but responsible disposal is the right call regardless. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division provides guidance on responsible electronics disposal for residents who want to handle it themselves.

Appliances: mostly recycled

Appliances are primarily metal, which is highly recyclable. Washers, dryers, ovens, ranges, and similar items go to scrap metal processors. The steel, aluminum, and copper inside get melted down and reused.

The exception is appliances containing refrigerants, specifically refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, and dehumidifiers. These require that the refrigerant be properly recovered before the appliance goes to scrap. The EPA's Section 608 regulations govern refrigerant handling, and we comply with those requirements. The refrigerant is recovered and the remaining metal goes to recycling.

Water heaters and other large non-refrigerant appliances go directly to scrap.

Yard debris: compost and mulch

Yard debris, including branches, brush, leaves, and natural organic material, goes to composting or mulch processing facilities where available. This keeps organic material out of the landfill and puts it back into productive use.

Treated lumber and composite materials from fencing or decking are a different category. These often contain preservatives or binders that disqualify them from composting and they typically go to the landfill.

General household junk: honest about the landfill

Some things end up in the landfill. Broken plastic items, worn-out household goods, mixed materials that can't be separated efficiently, and anything that doesn't fit a donation or recycling stream goes to disposal.

We don't want to overstate this. A professional junk removal service that sorts carefully will divert more from the landfill than a single person hauling everything in a rented truck and dumping it all in one spot. But we're not recycling 100% of what we pick up, and any company claiming that is overstating.

Our goal is to divert what we reasonably can, handle regulated materials properly, and be honest about the rest.

How to maximize what gets reused

If environmental impact matters to you, a few things help.

Tell us what's in good condition. We'll prioritize those items for donation sorting. Give us a quick description when you book and we can coordinate accordingly.

Set aside electronics before we arrive. If you've already separated your electronics into one area, the sorting process goes faster and nothing gets missed.

Consider donating usable furniture yourself before calling us. If you have items in genuinely good shape, organizations like Pick-Up My Donation, which operates in the Atlanta area, offer free pickup of quality furniture for donation. That gets more material to people who can use it.

For large appliances in working order, try listing them on Facebook Marketplace for free before scheduling a pickup. Plenty of people will haul away a working refrigerator at no cost if it saves them from buying a new one.

Common questions about where junk goes

Does junk removal really recycle, or does it all go to the landfill?

Responsible junk removal companies sort for donation and recycling before anything goes to the landfill. We separate electronics for e-waste recyclers, offer furniture to donation partners, and send metal appliances to scrap processors. General mixed waste and items that don't qualify for donation do go to disposal. No company recycles 100% of what they pick up, and any claim otherwise deserves scrutiny.

What happens to my old TV when junk removal takes it?

TVs contain materials that require specialized processing. We route all TVs and monitors to certified e-waste recyclers who handle the screens, circuit boards, and other components properly. None of it goes directly into a general landfill.

Can you donate furniture for me when you pick up my junk?

If the furniture is in good condition, yes, we flag it for donation and try to route it to local partners. If it's damaged, stained, or worn out, donation centers will typically reject it, so it goes to disposal. Tell us when you book what condition your furniture is in.

Where does construction debris go after junk removal?

Clean wood and metal get processed for scrap or recycling where possible. Mixed construction debris, drywall, and composite materials typically go to a construction and demolition landfill, which is a different facility than standard municipal waste. Most C&D materials are inert, which presents fewer environmental concerns than mixed household waste.

FAQ

Quick answers

Do you offer same-day junk removal?

Yes. We keep a same-day or next-day guarantee on both junk removal and dumpster drop-offs, based on availability, and we have held that standard for years. We are closed on Sundays, so a Saturday call means a same-day or Monday appointment.

How long does junk removal take?

Most pickups take about 30 to 45 minutes on site, and many are faster. Larger jobs such as a full home or storage unit cleanout take longer, but the majority of jobs are smaller than people expect.

How much does junk removal cost?

There is no flat rate, because jobs range from a single box to a full house or storage unit cleanout. Pricing is custom and based on how much space your items take up on the truck and how long the removal takes our crew. Jobs start at a $175 minimum, and you always get a firm price before any work begins.

What do you do with the junk you haul?

We run a landfill diversion program and do not use landfills. Loads go to transfer stations, recycling centers, and scrap yards, where salvageable items are pulled out, metal is recovered and recycled, construction debris is often milled into mulch or building material, tires become rubber playground mulch, and yard waste is turned into wood chips. We donate usable items to local charities when a load allows it. Because most jobs are mixed loads, individual pieces are not always in donatable condition by the time they reach the truck, but keeping material out of the landfill is central to how we work.

Will I get a price before you start?

Yes. Every job starts with a free, no-obligation quote. We assess the volume and the access when we arrive, give you a firm upfront price, and only begin once you approve it. No hidden fees and no surprises.
